Impulse Buys My Dog Totally Manipulated Me Into

Updated: Oct 7

Golden retriever eagerly faces a blurred yellow tennis ball in the foreground, tongue out, on a gravel surface. Playful mood.

We’ve all been there—just casually walking past the pet aisle, minding our own business, when BAM! Your dog hits you with that look. You know the one—the big, irresistible eyes, the wagging tail that’s basically a metronome for cuteness, and the full-on puppy persuasion that melts your willpower faster than peanut butter on a spoon. Honestly, I’m convinced my dog has a PhD in manipulation, because somehow, I end up with a shopping cart full of “must-have” toys that I never planned on buying.

Today, I’m confessing my top impulse buys, ranked from the cheapest “oh, why not?” to the “wait, how did this happen?” splurges. Spoiler alert: each one brought so much joy (and a little chaos) that I don’t regret a single one. Well, maybe the pizza toy—but only because it’s basically a one-hit wonder.

  1. Petco Plush Pizza Dog Toy, Medium 🍕 — $2.99

This little pizza slice might be the cheapest toy in the bunch, but it packs a serious punch when it comes to entertainment. It crackles, and sounds like an actual snack, which means it’s basically catnip for dogs—if dogs loved pizza more than anything (which mine totally does).

I swear, the minute I pulled this out, my pup was hooked. The sound alone commands attention like a puppy megaphone. And while it didn’t last longer than a few enthusiastic chomp sessions, the joy it brought? It's basically like dog crack, so to maintain your sanity, you might want to have a box of tissues handy for the unavoidable "oops, I just wrecked my new favorite toy" meltdown.

Spoiler: It’s me crying over the shredded pizza, not the dog.

  1. Petlou Carrot Squeaky Plush Dog Toy 🥕 — $15.00

This carrot is the ideal blend of quirky and practical. I discovered this medium-sized plush carrot at TJ Maxx and instantly thought, "Why not?" It's cute, slightly whimsical, and somehow exudes "healthy vibes," even though it's obviously a toy. My dog enjoys it for its texture and the perfect size to tote around like a treasured item.

What I didn’t expect was how this humble carrot would become a cuddle buddy on lazy afternoons and a fetch toy on sunny days. It’s the kind of toy that looks like it belongs in a farmer’s market stand but secretly doubles as a chew toy—and honestly, that’s just the kind of playful deception I appreciate.

Plus, every time I see it, I can’t help but smile. It’s like a little reminder that sometimes the simple things bring the biggest joy.

Side note: He has two sizes large and XL.

  1. Summer Escapes Round Plastic Wading Pool 🏖️ — $20.99

I'll be upfront—this idea was mostly mine, meant for some exciting fun on hot days. The blue kiddie pool from Tractor Supply seemed ideal for cooling down, but my golden retrievers? They usually just prefer to dip their paws in and call it a day. No big splashes or full swims, just some relaxed foot-soaking with a super chill vibe.

Still, it’s become their little summer hangout spot—a place to cool down those paws and maybe pretend they’re beach pups, even if the splashing action is more “gentle drip” than “wave crash.” It’s simple, it’s silly, and honestly, that little pool has saved me from countless muddy paw prints inside. So, even if the splash factor is low, it’s definitely a summer win in our book.

  1. 30 inch tall Christmas Golden Retriever 🎄 — $39.99

Every year, there’s one decoration that sneaks its way into my holiday haul, and yep—you guessed it—it’s the Christmas golden retriever from Home Depot. This little guy is basically holiday magic wrapped in fur and glitter, spreading festive cheer everywhere it goes. Sure, it’s not the cheapest impulse buy, but the joy it brings? Completely worth it.

It manages to reach every corner of my home, enhancing the season's vibrancy and filling my heart with joy. It's like having a festive companion that's always ready to cuddle and spread positive vibes—along with a gentle reminder that sometimes, spending a little extra on happiness is the best investment.

Side note: We also have the Halloween version.

  1. Wagwear Mojave Wagwellies in Purple 💜 — $49.99

Now, let’s talk fancy footwork. These Wagwear Mojave Wagwellies in vibrant purple are not just boots—they’re a statement. When I spotted these, I immediately thought, “My dog deserves to strut in style,” and let me tell you, these boots deliver. Designed to protect paws from hot pavement, rocky trails, and everything in between, they’re functional and fabulous.

But here’s the best part: slipping these boots on instantly ups my pup’s confidence—and mine, because now I get to pretend I’m a stylish dog mom in a retro music video. Plus, they keep those paws clean and safe, which means fewer muddy paw prints around the house and more Instagram-worthy walk photos. Total win-win.

What’s the most hilarious or unexpected way your dog has “helped” you justify an impulse buy?

  • That one toy they destroyed in 5 minutes (but loved anyway)

  • The fancy gadget you thought was definitely overkill

  • The random “just because” item that’s become their new fave

  • The giant item that takes up half your living room
